About Black Arts Illuminated

Black Arts Illuminated (BAI) is the team behind TASK and SecTor, Canada’s largest annual IT Security Education Conference.

After years of attending IT security and technology events around the world, passionate IT professionals Brian Bourne and Bruce Cowper were disappointed that similar events were not available to the Canadian community.

They decided to fill the void and teamed up in 2004.

It didn’t take long for the Toronto-based duo to find support for their initial project: an IT security user group. In February 2005, the Toronto Area Security Klatch (TASK) held its first meeting to discuss, debate and share IT security knowledge.

Building on TASK’s success, in 2006 Brian, Bruce and friend Robert Buren created Black Arts Illuminated with their focus set on the launch of the inaugural Security Education Conference Toronto (SecTor) in November 2007.

TASK has since gone on to become North America’s largest and most successful IT security user group, celebrating over 14 years, 120 meetings and 3,600 active members. SecTor has become Canada’s premier IT security conference, growing exponentially in reputation and size including an impressive increase from the 425 attendees and 28 speakers at SecTor 2007 to the 3,500+ attendees and 90  expert speakers at the recent conference.

Since being founded in 2004, Black Arts Illuminated Inc., has grown into a team of dedicated and like-minded professionals with a passion for bringing relevant, engaging and reputable conferences for the benefit of the Canadian community.
